May 2018 Legislative Update

2018 will be a very busy year for Wyoming politics.  A $600 million education-funding deficit still looms over the legislature while all 60 members of the Wyoming House of Representatives are up for reelection as well as 15 (half) of the Wyoming Senate.  All 5 elected seats in Wyoming’s Executive Branch are up and 7 Republicans and one Democrat are running for Governor.  What will the interim period between now and the January 8, 2019 general session bring?

While significant action is unlikely between now and the August primary election, the interim period is well underway with all standing committees scheduled to meet 3 times between now and the 2019 legislative general session. The Joint Revenue Committee is planning to discuss the possibility of a “big box tax” as well as a possible “corporate income tax.”  Your association will monitor and be weighing in on both of these as appropriate.  The Revenue Committee will also consider stamping of cigarettes and an alternate funding source for the Wyoming Office of Tourism.  Because the upcoming session will be a general session we expect somewhere around 500 bills to be introduced.  We will have a better idea of the bill specifics later this fall.

Wyoming’s primary election will be held on August 21, 2018 and the general election will be held on November 6, 2018. All 60 members of the Wyoming House of Representatives and half (15) members of the Wyoming Senate are up for reelection this summer.  As well all 5 of the states Executive Branch elected officials are up for election and there are 7 Republicans and one Democrat running for Governor.  Congresswoman Liz Cheney and U.S. Senator John Barrasso are both also up for reelection.

As the election continues to unfold and we get closer to the fall we will have a clearer picture of how the legislative landscape for Wyoming’s Retail Industry will unfold.  Please keep an eye on the WRA monthly e-newsletter for up to date information on issues impacting your business.  As always if you would like more information or have any questions please contact WRA Executive Director Chris Brown at or at 307-634-8816 x 207
