U.S. Labor Department Proposes New Overtime Rules

The Department of Labor’s proposal to drastically change the federal overtime pay rules is a bad deal for both retailers and retail employees. DOL’s proposed rule more than doubles the current salary threshold of $23,660 for retail managers and other employees to be exempt from overtime. The new threshold would be $50,440 in 2016, and it would automatically increase every year thereafter.   Read More »

E-Fairness Update: When Will Congress Level the Playing Field?

Main street brick and mortar retail businesses in Wyoming, whose stores employ thousands of Wyoming residents, have endured a competitive disadvantage to online retailers for many years. In 1992 a Supreme Court decision in the Quill vs. North Dakota case stated that a business must have a physical presence in a state before that state can make it collect sales taxes. The Internet was in its infancy in 1992 and in the year’s following the Quill decision e-commerce has exploded across the country and the world.  Read More »

EMV Card & Transaction Facts

Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express (the card brands) have announced that EMV chip card acceptance is coming to the United States, the last developed country in the world to adopt this form of payment. Many card issuers, such as Capital One, Bank of America, Citi, Chase and others have started issuing chip cards to consumers. The EMV chips are embedded in credit and/or debit cards that also have a magnetic stripe to be used at businesses that support either EMV or magnetic stripe.  Read More »

Wyoming “Women of Influence” Winners Announced

Last Friday, Wyoming Business Report honored 11 outstanding women as Women of Influence in the state. More than 200 people attended an awards breakfast in their honor. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Jackson hotelier Clarene Law, who has helped raise the profile of Jackson Hole’s tourism industry in her dual career in hospitality and politics. In the latter position, Law helped found the Wyoming Business Council and served in the state legislature for 14 years.  Read More »

Digital Lessons from Back-to-School and College 2015

Digital’s role in back-to-school shopping is trending up again this year. Nearly half of families shopping say they will take advantage of retailers’ buy online, pick up in store or ship to store options, and nine in 10 will take advantage of retailers’ free shipping offers. And the importance of smartphone and tablet browsing and buying is growing, too.
