2016 Primary Election Report and Legislative Update

Primary Election

The 2016 Wyoming Primary Election took place last month with our state’s lone congressional seat being sought by a crowded field of candidates.  All sixty seats in the Wyoming House of Representatives and fifteen (half) of the Wyoming Senate seats were up as well.  The Wyoming General Election will be on November 8, 2016.

Congressional Race

Liz Cheney (R) and Ryan Green (D) both prevailed over a crowded field of candidates. They will face Libertarian candidate Lawrence Gerard Streumph and Constitutional candidate Daniel Clyde Cummings in the general election.  Longtime industry supporter Leland Christensen came in second for the Republican race and will retain his seat in the Wyoming Senate for the next 2 years.

Wyoming Senate

The Wyoming Senate had some closely contested primary contests.  One of the most notable was in Laramie County between former House member and industry supporter David Zwonitzer (R), newcomer Lindi Kirkbride (R) and Anthony Bouchard (R).  Bouchard defeated Zwonitzer by 4 votes. Zwonitzer’s wife, Kym will run as an independent against Bouchard in the general election. Longtime industry supporter Michael Von Flatern (R) defeated challenger Rod Mathis in Campbell County. Cheyenne Attorney Tara Nethercott (R) defeated David Pope (R) and Bill Weaver (R).  Wyoming Office of Tourism board member Liisa Anselmi-Dalton (D) ran unopposed in Sweetwater County and industry supporter Jim Anderson ran unopposed in Natrona County.  There will be some interesting and important races in the general election.

Wyoming House of Representatives

The most shocking news in the Wyoming Primary Election was the defeat of longtime industry supporter and current Majority Floor Leader Rosie Berger (R) in Sheridan County by challenger Bo Biteman (R).  This vacancy along with the retirement of current Speaker of the House, Kermit Brown (R) and the failed congressional campaign of the current Speaker Pro Tempore Tim Stubson (R) leaves three of four leadership positions in the Wyoming House open.  Numerous rumors have been circulating as to who will fill these vacancies and we will know more this fall.

There were a number of other impactful decisions made during the primary.  Several key industry supporters won their races including Republicans Dan Zwonitzer and Sue Wilson from Laramie County, Dan Kirkbride from Platte County, Mark Kinner from Sheridan County, Pat Sweeney and Jerry Obermueller from Natrona County and Jamie Flitner from Big Horn County.

We will not have an accurate count on how the makeup of each chamber could potentially impact Wyoming’s retail industry until the General election.
