Questions and answers: Minimum Credit Card Purchases

Q: Can I set minimum credit card purchase amounts (such as $10) to avoid the customer who will spend a dollar and cost me fifteen cents in handling costs?

A: Visa and MasterCard, in their merchant agreements, do no allow merchants to set a minimum amount for a purchase. If you accept these cards, you are obligated to accept them for purchases of any amount.

Discover and American Express do allow minimums but only if minimums are applied to all cards the retailer accepts. Thus, any place that accepts MasterCard or Visa wouldn’t be allowed to set a minimum for American Express or Discover.

If Visa or MasterCard discover that a merchant has violated the agreement, it could refuse to do business with the merchant – violators could lose the ability to accept Visa or MasterCard. That’s a pretty big price to pay to save a few pennies.

Credit cards may have up-front handling costs, but retailers should always realize that all payment methods have handling costs. Studies by companies such as the U.S. Postal Service have evaluated that the cost of handling cash and checks was similar to handling credit cards when all expenses are factored in.

And always remember that the customer that just put a buck on his credit card today can come back and put $100 on it tomorrow.
